Learn the Basics of Growing Food from The Urban Farm
Here in the Valley of the Sun, we can grow food year-round. A five-part, 10-hour workshop, Growing Food: The Basics, taught by Greg Peterson, of The Urban Farm, and Kari Spencer, of The Micro Farm Project, will teach students how to grow fruits, veggies, herbs and greens for their family. Designed for the beginner, this basic organic desert gardening workshop will equip participants with the information to start growing this spring, including hands-on time in the garden.
Three classroom sessions will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., March 11, 18 and 25, at Good Karma Wellness Center. Two hands-on sessions are held from 10 a.m. to noon, March 15 and 22, at the Micro Farm Project’s front-yard farm
Topics include selecting a garden site, soil prep and composting, growing in containers, planting at the right time, seeds vs. transplants, planting techniques, feeding and watering your garden, harvesting and season extension ideas. It includes a laminated copy of The Urban Farm Planting Calendar and access to the Growing Food for Beginners online gardening resource files.
Cost is $99, bring a friend for an additional $49. For more information and to register, visit Urbanfarm.org/events/event/411-growing-food-for-beginners.
