Soap making, although daunting, is actually quite simple with the right ingredients and instructions. Here are step-by-step instructions for making your own melt and pour soap. This is a perfect handcrafted gift, just in time for the holidays. This makes three different two-ounce soap bars: green tea peppermint sugar soap, peppermint oatmeal soap and lavender peppermint soap.
6 oz goat milk soap base
¼ tsp organic, Japanese matcha green tea powder
2 Tbs lavender flowers, ultra blue grade
2 Tbs rolled oats
1 packet granulated sugar
5/8 dram peppermint essential oil
¼ dram sunflower oil
Mini-loaf pans
Wooden craft sticks
Household items:
Pyrex bowl or Mason jar
Spoon, rolling pin, or mortar and pestle
Hot pad
Step 1: First, coat bottom of each mini-loaf pan with dried goods; one with lavender flowers, one with whole rolled oats and one with sugar.
Step 2: Crush or grind up remaining lavender flowers and set aside for later. Repeat step with rolled oats and set crushed oats aside separately.
Step 3: Pour sunflower oil into a small dish or bowl and add a tiny bit of green tea powder to oil; stir green tea powder in until oil is tinted olive green.
TIP: Use the green tea powder sparingly, otherwise the mixture will be tough to pour; set aside.
Step 4: Cut goat milk soap base into cubes and put into Mason jar or Pyrex dish. Microwave in 20-second bursts until completely melted. The soap base melts quickly, so be careful not to overheat it.
TIP: Keep in mind that you are using natural materials for coloring so over time, the green tea and lavender will oxidize a little.
Step 5: Carefully remove Pyrex bowl or mason jar from microwave; quickly stir in peppermint essential oil.
Step 6: Pour melted soap base and peppermint essential oil mixture evenly into each mini-loaf pan.
Step 7:
Green Tea Peppermint Sugar Scrub: Quickly stir tinted green tea tinted sunflower oil into the mini-loaf pan with sugar; mix color throughout.
Peppermint Oatmeal Soap: Add a couple pinches of crushed oats to mini-loaf pan with rolled oat coating; quickly mix crushed oats throughout.
Lavender Peppermint Soap: add a few pinches of crushed lavender into mini-loaf pan with lavender flowers; quickly mix crushed lavender in.
Put mini-loaf pans into the fridge to set for at least 30 minutes until solid. Once your soap sets up completely, they are ready to be enjoyed.
